Starting from the front row he led 13 laps and crossed the finish line ahead of runner up Al Unser to claim his Indy 500 victory.Mark set a new track record averaging 162.962 MPH for 500 miles.This record would stand for twelve years Mark competed in 5 Indy 500's and was the 1969 Rookie of the Year. Mark won Championships in the U.S. Road Racing Championship Trans-Am, Can-Am, IROC and SCCA.. Mark Donohue and Roger Penske became one of the most successful owner-driver associations in the history of racing.In 1973, driving an AMC Matador for Penske Racing in NASCAR's top division, the Winston Cup Series, Donohue won the season-opening event at Riverside . It was Penske's first NASCAR victory. On August 19, 1975, Mark tragically succumbed to injuries sustained during practice for the F1 Austrian Grand Prix. Mark has been inducted in the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America , International Motorsports Hall of Fame and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame.
